January 25th, 2011 at 7:05amAfter more than a decade of recording and performing, it’s well established that the three members of Hot Club of Cowtown are superb revivalists of hot jazz and Texas swing. Thankfully, the trio has aspirations beyond that. The group shows off its musical roots on the new album, Wishful Thinking, with covers of legendary songwriters from each genre – Hoagy Carmichael on the jazzy “Georgia” and Bob Wills on the effervescent swing of “Can’t Go on This Way.” Rather than be hermetically sealed in time, the Clubbers rely on originals that present a nod to traditions but are firmly grounded in the 21st century. Particular standouts on an album full of quality fare come from violinist/vocalist Elana James on the bittersweet “Reunion,” “What You Meant to Me” and smoky “One Step Closer.”
